Training
SDF training is delivered through a trauma-informed lens, creating safe, inclusive, and empowering spaces where people can learn, share, and build confidence.

Training
SDF is funded by the Scottish Government to support Alcohol and Drug Partnerships (ADPs) across Scotland by providing learning and development opportunities that help strengthen and develop the workforce. Each ADP area is allocated three funded training days per year.
Our sessions are delivered in person or online by experienced trainers. The courses are interactive, practical, and tailored to workforce needs. Participants receive a certificate of completion for CPD purposes, including for those registered with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).

Supporting Your Workforce
To support workforce development across the alcohol and drugs sector, SDF training is aligned with four key competency levels: Informed, Skilled, Enhanced, and Specialist. These levels outline the knowledge and skills expected of workers based on the nature of their role and their level of responsibility. From those newly entering the field to experienced practitioners, team leaders, and strategic decision-makers, the levels help ensure that everyone receives the right training to support people affected by substance use effectively and confidently.
Informed
The ‘informed’ level specifies the baseline practice-specific knowledge and skills every worker in the drugs and alcohol sector should be developing upon entering employment.
Skilled
The ‘skilled’ level specifies the practice-specific knowledge and skills expected of practitioners who have direct or substantial contact and responsibility for people affected by substance use, and who are responsible for direct care or treatment of people affected by substance use. The ’skilled’ level would typically apply to those in roles where there is responsibility for planning and delivery of support, care, or treatment.
Enhanced
The ‘enhanced’ level specifies the practice-specific knowledge and skills expected of anyone who has frequent contact with people affected by substance use. The ‘enhanced’ levels would typically apply to those in more advanced roles, such as supervisory or managerial positions.
Specialist
The ‘specialist’ level specifies the practice-specific knowledge and skills expected of leaders or those delivering specialist care to those affected by substance use. The ‘specialist’ levels apply to those in roles where the postholder is leading, guiding, supporting, or educating colleagues; and to those influencing the strategic direction of an organisation.

Each learner should set up their own account on the SDF Learning Centre to book their own training, and not book on another person’s behalf. This allows the learner to track their own learning progress and receive certificates on completion of training for their CPD records.

Bespoke Courses
In addition to the funded offer, we can and have been commissioned to deliver a wide range of training tailored to the needs of ADPs and wider services.
If you’re looking for training on a topic that isn’t currently listed, we would be happy to discuss your needs. We regularly design and deliver bespoke training for teams, services, and Alcohol and Drug Partnerships across Scotland. Visit our bespoke training page or get in touch to find out more.
